Atsushi Nishigori

Atsushi Nishigori (錦織　敦史) was born in 1978. Nicknamed “Goripon”, Nishigori is a character designer and animator trained at Toei, established at Gainax, and now at A-1. While at Gainax he most frequently collaborated with Hiroyuki Imaishi, doing character designs for Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking. His designs have more of a caricatured edge to them than Hiramatsu’s or Sadamoto’s, making them better suited for Imaishi’s shows. The stripper pole transformation from Panty & Stocking is his most recognizable scene animation-wise ¹.

Left Gainax for A-1 where he designed, directed, and wrote The Idolmaster (2011). Though the J-Pop source material was not well received critically, Nishigori managed to turn the show into an omnibus project for exciting new animator talent, including several Gainax expats. Nishigori’s own episode 1, told through POV documentary footage, was extremely divisive¹.

As a storyboarder Nishigori is indistinctive but not incompetent, as can be seen in his Zetsubou Channel portion of Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei 7. He also directed and animated a music video, “S.t.a.r.S.” with Yoko from Gurren Lagann and the music video episode 10E from Panty & Stocking¹.
