Kou Yoshinari

Kou Yoshinari was born in 1969 in Tokyo. Older brother of You Yoshinari, nicknamed "Aninari". A talented if conservative animator during his early career, starting in the 00s Kou radically changed his approach. A notoriously slow worker and a perfectionist1.

Working with Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Hisashi Ezura on the Ghost in the Shell video game intro and Blood: The Last Vampire probably inspired him to take control over the digital processing of his own cuts. A one-man production team, Kou’s scenes are wholly his, from the in-betweens to the coloring, and he almost always animates on the 1s. His cuts often look hand-painted due to their solid shading and elaborate colored lineart, feasible only through digital techniques. His effects animation is sometimes compared to Mitsuo Iso’s. Given the rarity of full animation in anime and Kou’s labored art, his cuts are sometimes confused for CG. Despite his visual fidelity and painterly style Kou is a professed fan of Yoshinori Kanada and homaged him in his cut for Abenobashi 31.

Debuted this unique method in 2004 on the fourth Fullmetal Alchemist opening and, most famously, on the first episode of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Kou’s Nanoha cuts generated much discussion among sakuga fans and he’s since become a prominent name in sakuga fan circles. Despite animating for high profile shows like Eureka Seven, he’s employed mostly on Seven Arcs/Studio Silver ero productions and video game cutscenes to better fit his protracted schedule1.

Was set to be character designer for the Neppu Kairiku Bushi Road TV show before it got canned. Character designer for the Valkyrie Profile video game series and the White Album TV anime, the latter of which featured extensive animation work by him1.
