Jun Arai

Jun Arai(新井　淳) was born in 1974, in Tokyo. Also known as "Arasan". Started at Sudio Giants and gained popularity as a Kanada-style animator.

Part of the modern resurgence of interest in the Kanada School. Arai’s KA is effectively one big homage to 80s sakuga and in particular Masahito Yamashita. He pushes the qualities of that style – spiral smoke clouds, flares, speedlines, odd timings, impact frames, multitone shading – to indulgence. His shading is often singled out for praise¹.

Has faced criticisms that his style is just a copy of Kanada’s and Yamashita’s without any innovations of his own and that his motion is too erratic and jarring.².

He criticises the current situation of the industry and its practices of exploiting animators. Due to that, and receiving criticism from other animators on twitter, he closed his twitter account and stopped working on anime. He reopened his twitter account but still, as of 1/1/2018, hasn't returned to the industry, with "Hitsugi no Chaika" in 2014 being the last time he did animation work.
