Katsuhiko Nishijima

Katsuhiko Nishijima(西島克彦) was born in 1960, in Chiba Prefecture. He first joined Studio Live, then after spending some time at Studio Deen he went on to establish studio Graviton alongside Hideaki Anno, Shoichi Masuo and Kouji Itou. He is currently a freelance who worked regularly with Studio Fantasia, but that studio filed for bankruptcy in 2016.

He wanted first to be a mangaka, but thinking "I have to make a living" he enrolled in Chiba University of Commerce. However, he dropped out of the university after spending only one year. When watching Gundam, that aired during his university year, he sent a letter to Yoshiyuki Tomino with the intention of joining studio Sunrise(Nihon Sunrise at the time). Sunrise weren't accepting in-between animators back then, so Sunrise producer Masami Iwasaki referred him to Toyo Ashida's Studio Live. He joined them after passing an entrance test.

He did his best works in the 80s, going all out in Urusei Yatsura and in OVAs such as Outlanders and Dirty Pair. His style, although being heavily influenced by Kanada, is really distinct. One of his characteristics is his impact frames, that are only black and white and sometimes include faces of the characters. As for his drawing style, he was known for drawing cute characters with big eyes in a stylistic way, with sexy bodies. His also has a stylistic way of drawing and framing one-on-one fighting scenes, in which each character goes closer and farther from camera in turn.

He shifted more and more towards directing rather than animating, especially in OVA projects, in the 90's and late 80's. He currently works regularly as an animator and a storyboarder on TV shows. Some of the people he worked regularly with were Moriyama Yuuji and Noriyasu Yamauchi.
