Genichirou Abe

Genichirou Abe (阿部　厳一朗). Arguably SHAFT’s best in-house animator. He first started getting attention for his OPs on the Negima spinoffs which featured complicated shots of skydiving. He has since been on nearly every major SHAFT production and was even included among the all-star staff of Gurren Lagann 15. His first character design gig was on Mekaku City Actors¹.

Abe’s animation is characteristically layered and dense, and the way he draws hair, skin, and clothing with ruffles warrants comparison to Hironori Tanaka (the two even worked together on the Suruga Monkey fight from Bakemonogatari 8) and many of his cuts have the Ohira wobble. He has said he enjoys doing background animation and tries to integrate it into many of his scenes¹.
