Hideki Hamasu

Hideki Hamasu (濱洲　英喜) was born in Kumamoto Prefecture. Toei animator who rose to prominence during the post-Akira OVA boom. Early in his career he co-animated a scene in Akira with Kouichi Arai. He would become a recurring presence on Toei’s crime-themed OVAs from the early 90s, serving as assistant AD on a few episodes of Crying Freeman and character designer/animation director for Vampire Wars. He solo animated the second episode of the Hana Ichi Monme OVA. His rising prominence allowed him to work on Ghost in the Shell, and afterwards Hamasu was in high demand for feature films1.

His animation focuses mainly on character acting. Hamasu’s scenes often feature minimal camerawork with a heavy emphasis on expressive facial and body animation. Like his colleague Arai, Hamasu was influenced by late 80s realism and Fist of the North Star animator Junichi Hayama1.

Animated the car chase from Satoshi Kon’s episode of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure OVA. The scene so impressed Kon that he hired Hamasu to handle character design and animation direction for Perfect Blue. Hamasu was set to serve a similar role in Millennium Actress but was replaced by Takeshi Honda when Hamasu contracted severe tendon inflammation. Has appeared on all of Kon’s other projects, including being credited with “Maromi design” for Paranoia Agent1.

Since the 90s he has mostly animated for sakuga-heavy productions, particularly those by Studio Ghibli and Mamoru Hosoda1.
