Manabu Ohashi

Manabu Ohashi (大橋　学) was born in 1949. Pen name Mao Lamdo. Animator initially at Annapuru and Madhouse but became freelance later into his career. Part of Osamu Dezaki’s inner circle and epitomized his approach where fewer, prettier drawings are privileged over convincing motion¹.

Ohashi’s animation looks like moving storybook illustrations with a Western inflection to his drawings. His scenes have prominent hatched shading and he excels in depictions of natural phenomena like clouds and waves. During his early career he worked closely with Dezaki on his various projects: The Fire G-Men, Gamba no Bouken (solo’d ep 26B), Takarajima (solo’d the OP, ED, and episode 10), and the famous ‘gekiga’ episode 15A of Ganso Tensai Bakabon are standout examples¹.

Associated with directors close to Dezaki as well. He collaborated with Toshio Hirata on two OVAs: The Golden Bird, as CD/AD where he came up with the decision to leave gaps in the lineart for stylistic effect, and Bobby’s Girl, as animation director. He was the character designer and animation director for the unreleased anime film Tomcat’s Big Adventure directed by Dezaki protege Ryutaro Nakamura¹.

Has dabbled in direction on rare occasions. Directed episodes 2A and 13A of Manga Sekai Mukashi Banashi in his ‘moving illustrations’ style. Most significantly, he directed and animated the “Cloud” segment from Robot Carnival, often considered his masterpiece. In-betweens for the film were done by his daughters¹.
