Masahiro Ando (Toei)

Masahiro Ando (安藤　正浩) was born in 1958. Started in the anime industry after joining Toei Douga (now Toei Animation).

Not to be confused with the Masahiro Ando from BONES. Oh Production animator who assisted Kazuo Komatsubara on animation direction for the Devilman OVA. Became an integral part of the animation staff for Goldfish Warning and Sailor Moon. Perhaps because of his contact with a number of realist animators on Devilman, Ando’s episodes have weightier movement during their action scenes1. Also known for being a pretty fast animator even when doing hard scenes.

Ando’s work on Sailor Moon has remained controversial. His characters are chubbier and somewhat stumpy, with wider faces and doughy limbs. Most fans faulted his rounded drawings for looking out of place in the generally angular Sailor Moon, for making the characters look younger, and for the occasional ugly face. Debates about Ando’s Sailor Moon episodes are usually centered around whether weak character drawings are excusable when the motion itself is fluid and dynamic, though some argue Ando’s designs have a charm of their own1.

Ando animated the Venus Crescent Beam and Mars Burning Mandala bank for Sailor Moon. He also animated the apocalyptic vision of The Silence in the first episode of Sailor Moon S. His last episode was 170 in Stars1.

After Sailor Moon Ando participated in a few other projects before joining studio A.C.G.T. He still does solo episodes on occasion but never on shows renowned for their direction or writing (Kill Me Baby, Oreca Battle, Tenkai Knights)1.

After his period at Toei, he now works at A.C.G.T2.
