Masahito Yamashita(山下　将仁) was born in 1961, In Hokkaido Prefecture. An 80s legend. Started at Yoshinori Kanada's Studio No.1, then to Studio OZ, then Stuido One Pattern(スタジオワンパターン), then Studio Nonmaruto(スタジオのんまると), then Square(now Square Enix) before finally going freelance in 2004. He is now working at Actas.

Influenced by Yoshinori Kanada and Kazuhide Tomonaga in his high school days, he drew his first key animation right after graduating at a precocious 18, his earliest work in New Tetsujin 28 and Urusei Yatsura and so on remains his most identifiable and interesting, while his unique approach to action reached a peak of sorts in the first OVA, Dallos, where he reportedly animated more than 250 shots in the last two episodes alone1.

Although a Kanada-style animator himself, he took up where Kanada left off, bending limbs further and using more extreme perspective1. One of the areas he differs from Kanada in are also his distinct effects. Widely imitated by many, some say influenced more animators than Kanada. Among those he influenced are Shinya Ohira, Jun Arai and probably Peter Chung and many others1.

His approach to action was highly intuitive, so to assure control over his animation he often drew every drawing in a sequence, specifying the duration of each drawing rather than take the chance of that action being messed up by an in-betweener1.

A famous anecdote tells of how he got in trouble for drawing two minutes' worth of key animation for what was supposed to be a 30 second scene in episode 52 of Urusei Yatsura. The scene in question is a classic example of the 'Yamashita run' that can also be seen elsewhere, like in the haunted school scene of the Beautiful Dreamer movie. The latter was an encore of Yamashita's scene in the "Willow Tree" episode, which apparently so pleased Mamoru Oshii that he wanted it to appear in his film1.

He had a change of approach at the beginning of the 90s to a more realistic style along with the industry. Unfortunately mostly failed to produce noteworthy works afterwords.
