Shinji Hashimoto

Shinji Hashimoto (橋本晋治).

Animator originally from Telecom during the height of sakuga realism in the 80s. Animated on Akira and was AD for Hakkenden episodes 1 (jointly with Shinya Ohira) and 9. Now recognized as one of the most talented and technically adept freelance animators in the industry¹.

Close friend and colleague of Shinya Ohira, whose style is closest to his own. Hashimoto’s KA is raw and dense, but able to conform more easily to traditional design sensibilities than Ohira’s as can be seen in the chase scene from Spriggan and the pizza delivery murder in Perfect Blue. Says he prefers sketchy drawings over clean ones. Like Ohira, he films himself acting out scenes for reference before animating¹.

Director and designer for “Tatami Voyage” in Yumemakura Baku’s Twilight Theater. Hashimoto claims he got the idea for the strange lumpy characters from Santa Inoue’s manga Bunpuku Chagama Daimaoh. Hashimoto’s only other directorial outing is the MTV-esque OP for Legend of Black Heaven. He sakkan’d and designed the “Kid’s Story” segment from The Animatrix and co-sakkan’d Hirotsugu Kawasaki’s film Legend of the Millennium Dragon¹.

As with Ohira, he’s a regular presence on Studio Ghibli’s films. After seeing Hashimoto’s cut in a promo video for My Neighbor the Yamadas, Hayao Miyazaki reportedly rushed to a microphone to ask who animated the scene. Hashimoto also animated the much-discussed running sequence in Kaguyahime¹.
