Takashi Hashimoto

Takashi Hashimoto (橋本 敬史) was born in 1965. Also uses pen name 桐生雅則 (Kiryuu Masanori?).

Elder statesman of the explosion, Hashimoto is a prolific effects animator whose work synthesizes almost every major tendency in the field since the 90s. He was greatly inspired by Shinya Ohira’s and Toshiaki Hontani’s billowing clouds in Akira, formed a friendly rivalry with the Itano-ite Yasushi Muraki, and studied Shoichi Masuo’s tricky use of layers. However, his single greatest influence was Mitsuo Iso’s distinctive FX. What Hashimoto adds to his predecessors is an in-your-face swagger: all of his cuts are massive in scale and often cause the camera to shake with their impact. Hashimoto’s cuts present twenty plus years of FX development summarized in 30 seconds or less1.

Hashimoto has branched out into character designs for the projects of his colleague Kenji Nakamura. Chief animation and design duties for Nakamura’s shows Mononoke and Kuuchuu Buranko (as well as scattered designs here and there for [C] and Gatchaman Crowds) were handled exclusively by Hashimoto. His designs have a lovable ugliness about them, shifting between grotesque convulsions (Mononoke) and goofy caricature (Kuuchuu Buranko) with ease. Hashimoto also did the drawings for Nakamura’s Hakaba Kitarou OP1.
