Takeshi Honda (本田 雄) was born in 1968 in Ishikawa Prefecture. A dropout of Tokyo Designer Gakuin College. Affiliated with Studio Khara.

Founding member of studio Gainax. He was a crucial animation director on Nadia and Evangelion. Though well-known as an animator in his own right, he’s just as often acclaimed for delivering cinema-tier animation direction. Has worked with Mitsuo Iso, Yoshiyuki Momose, and Masami Obari in the past1.

Honda’s earliest cuts were comedic and fanservicey in nature, but he’s since proven himself versatile. His cuts on Bubblegum Crisis, especially episode 8, earned him the nickname ‘shishou’ (‘master’) from Takahiro Kishida. A master of body language, in particular scenes of characters walking and running. Honda’s skill comes from his ability to convey a character’s personality solely through their gait. His cuts have a recognizable bounce and springiness to their step1.

Occasional character designer: Beyond from The Animatrix, Metal Fighter Miku, Blue Submarine No. 6, Millennium Actress (jointly with Satoshi Kon), but above all Dennou Coil. However, despite handling the character designs and animation direction for the first two episodes, Honda left the show early on due to creative differences with series director Mitsuo Iso1.

He’s worked extensively on the Evangelion Rebuild films and headed up the animation in Mahiro Maeda’s Nishi-Ogikubo film for Khara’s Animator Expo1.

His technical skills are so acclaimed that someone pretended to be him in order to easily land a job at an art university before Khara representatives intervened1.
