Terumi Nishii

Terumi Nishii (西位　輝実). She graduated from Osaka Designers' College and then joined Studio Cockpit. She then went freelance, joined Studio Shiokaze for awhile and then went freelance again.

Animator influenced by Masaaki Iwane, Takahiro Kagami, and especially Yoshihiko Umakoshi while working as an in-betweener at subcontractor Studio Cockpit, a younger student of the brand of dynamic action the studio specializes in. She was a constant presence on a number of Umakoshi-designed shows including Casshern Sins, Mushishi, Jubei-chan 2, Ojamajo Doremi, Saint Seiya Omega, and Heartcatch Precure. Nishii has successfully imitated many of Umakoshi’s distinctive traits as an animator: rotund heads, shoujoesque facial features, sharp movements, a rhythmic back and forth tempo, and an intimate closeness in fights¹.

As a character designer the Umakoshi influence is just as pronounced. Nishii adapted Lily Hoshino’s designs for Mawaru Penguindrum and was chief AD (Nishii in-betweened on the Utena movie and drew Utena doujinshi early in her career). She’s also done character designs for Servant x Service and Kimi no Iru Machi, although in the latter case she didn’t AD on the show¹.
