Toshiyuki Inoue(井上 俊之) was born in 1961 in Osaka. He joined the industry after graduating from the Osaka designer College.

Originally from Studio Junio alongside Satoru Utsunomiya and Takashi Nakamura, now is freelance. Cut his teeth on the series Gu Gu Ganmo before establishing himself as a major force on feature films. The motorcycle race from Akira, the opening from Fly! Peek the Whale, and the bicycle scene from Kiki’s Delivery Service are among his most famous cuts. Regular presence on the films of Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Oshii, the latter calling him “the perfect animator”. Nicknamed the “karisuma animator” (‘charisma animator’) for his outgoing demeanor and high technical skill (though the term is now generally applied to any distinctive animator)1.

Despite his modest personality, Inoue is considered extremely technically gifted and a standout figure of the anime realists. Known for his rigorous and precise character motion, Inoue draws limited animation with an expert grasp on construction and timing. Inoue’s style is flexible, able to breathe volume into any design no matter how stylized. Purely focused on animation with no intention of becoming a director1.

Friends with Mitsuo Iso. Inoue says he learned how to draw convincing three-dimensional smoke from studying Iso’s scenes(although Iso considers regards him as a teacher2). Inoue was one of the main animators/animation directors on Dennou Coil, particularly after Takeshi Honda left the show1.

Fan of the studio Kyoto Animation. Championed their show K-On!, calling it “the ideal form of TV animation” from a technical standpoint1.
