Shinsaku Kozuma

Shinsaku Kozuma (上妻　晋作) was born in 1959.

Animator active during the 80s and 90s. Heavily influenced by Yoshinori Kanada as seen in his posing, flares, camera movement, and occasional Kanada dragon. He was KA on Birth and was employed at Masahito Yamashita’s short-lived Studio Oz. Despite this, Kozuma was one of the first animators to develop his own style distinct from dominant Kanada tendencies. His figures are gelatinous and move in an unintuitive yet fluid manner. Praised for his eccentric timing1.

His most definitive works are the Go-Q-Choji Ikkiman OP and the Irresponsible Captain Tylor Original Music Clip “Utsusemi no…”, both of which he solo animated and directed. He also did the character animation in the Irresponsible Captain Tylor OP. Major contributor to Akiyuki Shinbo’s legendary Yu Yu Hakusho 58, animating many of the effects-heavy shots (both he and Shinbo were members of Studio Oz during its heyday)1.

Currently employed by Square Enix and dedicates most of his effort to art and animation tasks on their games. Has occasionally returned to KA on a few small projects like Shinya Ohira’s Wanwa and Masaaki Yuasa’s Moon Witch Pretty Rabbie1.
