Sushio

From Animators Wiki

Sushio(すしお) was born in 1976 in Wakō, Saitama. His real name is Ishizaki Toshio(石崎 寿夫). Started at Gainax, but left in 2011 to take part in establishing studio Trigger. Has strong relation to Mamoru Hosoda and Yoshihiko Umakoshi.

He has synthesized various different styles into his own. His movement has the pose-heavy punchiness of Imaishi with the stylized fluidity of Yoshinari. He’s a professed fan of Hisashi Mori and his effects work bears that influence, although his explosions are strongly reminiscent of Yoshinari’s. He sometimes includes rabbits’ heads (called the ‘Sushio bunny’ by fans) as a joke in his scenes1.

His design work is as highly regarded as his animation. He did the character designs and animation direction for Hosoda’s One Piece movie which completely rehauled the manga’s default style for a flat shading scheme (a style which has proven influential for many younger Toei animators). His designs on KLK combined the aesthetic he had developed in his illustrations with callbacks to 1970s anime1.

His only directorial work to date is the Gurren Lagann Parallel Works short “Kittan Zero”. Like his illustrations, Kittan Zero utilizes a pale color scheme and comic book onomatopoeia1.

Massive fan of Akira. Saw it so many times in his youth his mother had to ban him from watching it1.
