You Yoshinari

You Yoshinari(吉成　曜) Was born in 1971, in Tokyo. Soon after graduating from Tokyo Designer College, he joined Madhouse in 1992. In the same year, he left Madhouse to join Gainax, where he worked for multiple years. He then joined Trigger after being invited by Hiroyuki Imaishi, and has been working for Trigger ever since. His speciality is effects and explosions, his explosions being "bubbly" and so special that sakuga fans call them "Yoshinari Explosions/吉成爆発". In a documentary with the Making of Little Witch Academia, the narrator mentioned that he is also one of the more influential animators of the generation with a world-wide fandom for his style.

His characters borrow some traits from American animation: rectangular heads, low contrast shading, big eyes, angular lineart. In fact, Yoshinari is a fan of Western animation and likes to animate/draw American cartoon characters in the style of Genndy Tartakovsky on the side for fun. He uses expertly timed smears, dramatic camerawork, and complicated background animation to convey dynamism. His movement is springy and tense, cleanly situated in the dominant cartoony mode of 00s Gainax. He’s evidently a fan of Osamu Tezuka, posting short tribute animations based on his manga online¹.

His big brother, Kou Yoshinari, is also a well-known animator.
