Akira Amemiya

Akira Amemiya(雨宮　哲) graduated from Tokyo University of Technology and was a part of the university's Anime Research Society. Started at Gainax, then went with the group that founded Trigger. A promising young animator.

His style is very similar to neo-Hiroyuki Imaishi with tweaks. "Amemiya’s cuts are less goofy, less chaotic, and contain more ‘retro’ devices like impact frames and multitonal shading. He also draws from Masami Obari, creating a strong sense of foreground and background by having figures switch between them along a diagonal axis. His mecha animation is pose-heavy and slightly dull in color." 1.

During his time in the university, he was heavily influenced by the work of Osaka University of Arts Anime Research Group "Group CAS". This group is known for having Ishihara Mitsuru and Shingo Adachi as former members. At the time of Amemiya, Toshiyuki Satō and Dennou Coil secondary director Yasukawa Masaru were still part of the group. Also Ikehata Hiroshi, although not a member anymore, was visiting regularly. This influence led him to want to create Kanada-style anime too.

Friends with Shingo Natsume, whom he invited to work on Gurren Lagann.

Married to animator Megumi Kouno.
