Megumi Kouno

Megumi Kouno (河野　恵美). Now freelance, but works regularly on A-1 Pictures' projects.

Originally from Dogakobo. A Gainax animator who had a rapid ascent in the early ’10s for her fluid character animation. Followed Atsushi Nishigori to A-1 where she’s been turning out a staggering number of cuts each year. She was responsible for the sakuga dance scenes in The Idolmaster and has worked on a number of shows including Space Dandy, Shinsekai Yori, and Love Lab. She animated Shin Itagaki’s ED4 for Hanamaru Kindergarten¹.

The most distinctive things about Kouno’s animation is its rough yet realistic sense of movement (her smears have been compared to Hironori Tanaka’s) and the way she draws human anatomy, particularly the pointy elbows and knees and wavy hair and clothing. She has the skills to do effects work like most Gainax animators and works on action heavy scenes on occasion, but her primary focus seems to be character animation¹.
